Snow disrupts The Royal

The snowfalls in January disrupted life for all at The Royal School but especially for the boarders and boarding house staff who were marooned at the top of Farnham Lane for several days. A few staff who lived locally were able to walk through deep snow to the school to relieve the beleaguered boarding house staff, to help cook meals and to clear pathways.

The children, however, thoroughly enjoyed the snow and all the associated disruption and excitement! It even sparked some creativity, including ‘snow-inspired’ poetry and photography. The boarders and staff managed to find many ways (both traditional and novel) to pass the time including building an igloo, making snow angels and enjoying a snow BBQ. When the roads cleared enough for school to resume the children at the junior school made the best possible use of the slopes on the lawns to go tobogganing. The heavy snow of January 2010 will long be remembered by The Royal School community.

The Snow

She is the freezing cold sniff on a winter’s morning,
The crisp on the grass when the day is dawning.
The feel on your tongue when falls her snowflakes,
And the soft white blanket on an iced-over lake.
The sound of silence falls in the frosty sky,
You can sledge on the roads as no cars are passing by.
Walking down the streets they don’t look the same,
In this winter wonderland we’re so glad that she came!
The icicles are hanging in the reflection of the sun:
“What’s that? A snowball! Quick, let’s run!”
It’s a shame when the snow goes all wet and slushy,
With the cars on the road and everyone rushing.
Back to school on Monday then the snow will be gone,
It was great while it lasted… and next year’s is still to come.

Snowy Day

Huge white droplets fall from the sky,
I look up and feel as if I could fly.
They look like dollops of vanilla ice-cream,
I’m so pleased I feel I could scream!

I go to bed feeling happy and glad,
My little sister going absolutely mad.
I tell her to go to bed,
And rest her sleepy head.

It’s morning time,
The snow looks fine.
My fingers are tingling at the feel of snow.
I can’t wait to get out and go.

Just a blanket of white,
It’s a wonderful sight.
But wait, a deer has come,
And ruined the picture, what a shame.

I run to wake Dad and Mum,
“Come on!” I yelled. “Come, come!”
They roll over and go back to sleep.
So I have no choice but to pull their feet.
